Impact on Student Learning
Formative assessment is something that I use in my classroom quite often. It helps me better diagnose student needs and guides my instructional planning. I formatively assess my students in a variety of ways, but my most often used form is the exit slip. Exit slips serve many different roles. They help provide closure to a lesson, they allow students time to self-reflect on their learning, and they help me gain a better sense of what they are thinking. In my exit slips, I want my students to not solely focus on the negative, but also reflect on what is going well for them. Below, I have included some sample exit slips as well as an assessment protocol I have used occasionally to help further analyze my student work. The procedure works great for exit slips, as it allows one to get a great visual of the main areas of student struggles. It also gives the teacher an opportunity to reflect and brainstorm strategies to better address student issues.
